Caspal: Italian Artisan Design Where Metal Meets Contemporary Craft
Caspal: Italian artisan design between metal, tradition and contemporary vision
Caspal is an Italian contemporary design brand founded by Biagio Castellani and Federica Paoli, rooted between Milan and the Valdera region of Tuscany. We create sculptural objects in metal — aluminium, brass, steel and silver — born from the encounter between artisan mastery and a profoundly contemporary aesthetic vision. Not simply decorative objects: material narratives of history, form and memory.
From past to present: our design philosophy
Our products are conceived as stories that begin in the past. Drawing inspiration from history and antiquity, we arrive at the present through material experimentation and a deeply contemporary sensibility.
Our approach to design is pure exploration. It always begins with a sketch by Federica Paoli — simple, conceptual, a guide for beginning to give shape to an object. Working alongside our craftsmen from the first rough prototype, we proceed through a gradual process of subtraction, until the final phase where every detail is studied to narrate, never to be redundant or excessive.
Our work represents the search for a contemporary design inspired by antiquity and our roots — our history. Where aluminium, willow and noble metals such as brass and silver are transformed into narrative objects, born of artisan wisdom and contemporary vision. Unique objects that tell stories of material and memory: the dialogue between metal and design, between tradition and experimentation. An aesthetic vision, but also a cultural one.
With Caspal, we bring the sensibility of a minimal yet functional design object and the continuity of an ancient manual craft.
Collectible design: when artisan tradition becomes an object of excellence
With some of our exclusive creations, we celebrate collectible design: unique objects, made to last and to be collected.
The Entrelacés collection, designed by Federica Paoli, is our contemporary reinterpretation of ancient hand-weaving techniques using natural willow — elevated to a new level of refinement and luxury through an additional metal plating process.
What once belonged to the world of arte povera becomes today an exclusive aesthetic language, where Italian artisan mastery of excellence meets the formal and material research typical of collectible design. Each weave becomes a functional yet beautiful object, part of a collection narrative crafted with precious materials and sophisticated finishes. Entrelacés embodies Caspal's ability to elevate tradition into a contemporary design object — one destined to endure.
Caspal materials: aluminium, brass, silver and natural willow
Every Caspal piece is handcrafted in Italy, between the workshops of Milan and the Valdera territory in Tuscany. The materials we use — aluminium, steel, brass, silver and natural willow — are not chosen for production convenience, but for their expressive capacity. Techniques range from casting and turning to polishing and plating, through to manual finishing: each process carries traces of a craft knowledge rooted in Italian artisan history, reinterpreted through a contemporary, minimalist formal sensibility.
Who are Biagio Castellani and Federica Paoli
Caspal was founded in 2025 by Biagio Castellani and Federica Paoli, previously co-founders of Situér Milano, a brand specialising in metal furnishings. With Caspal, the two designers chose to explore new expressive potentials of metal — moving towards more sculptural forms, more sophisticated finishes and an increasingly collectible design orientation.
The brand operates between Milan — where it collaborates with specialist artisan workshops — and the Valdera region of Tuscany, the founders' homeland, rich in history, art and manual knowledge. A territory that is an inexhaustible source of inspiration: a place of slow, mindful production, deeply rooted in the local cultural context.
